New Publication: Improved Fertility Preservation Care for Male Patients With Cancer After Establishment of Formalized Oncofertility Program

Survival to reproductive age among men with cancer has steadily increased and yet cancer therapy and cancer itself may carry the risk of infertility. Since 2006, Northwestern University has used a formalized fertility preservation program with expedited fertility care. Oncofertility Consortium® members assessed the impact of Northwestern's program by comparing the frequency of sperm cryopreservation and patient characteristics before and after its implementation.

New Publication from Oncofertility Consortium Members: Which Patients Pursue Fertility Preservation Treatments? A Multicenter Analysis of the Predictors of Fertility Preservation in Women with Breast Cancer

Oncofertility Consortium® members published a new article in Fertility and Sterility detailing the results of a study performed over five years. Consortium members evaluated predictors of undergoing fertility preservation treatment (FPT) in 108 women with breast cancer between 2005-2010 and 77 women with breast cancer who did not have FPT. First author, Ja Yeon Kim, MD, is a trainee with the Oncofertility Consortium® and began her work in June 2010, with Jennifer Mersereau, MD.

New Publication from Oncofertility Consortium Members in the Journal of Cancer Survivorship

A new publication from Oncofertility Consortium® members focuses on young adult female cancer survivors and fertility. Often young adult cancer survivors are unaware of their fertility status and uninformed regarding their fertility and fertility preservation options. This new qualitative research study in the Journal of Cancer Survivorship explores the fertility and parenthood concerns of reproductive age female cancer survivors and how they make parenthood decisions.

New Article in Nature from Oncofertility Consortium: Preserving Oocytes from Chemodestruction

Chemotherapy can save the lives of many individuals with cancer. Unfortunately, it usually causes infertility after treatment, posing a concern for these people who will face a lifetime condition that considerably limits the quality of their lives. Advances in the field of oncofertility have brought hope to cancer survivors who long to plan a family; however, standard approaches only rely on cryopreservation of sperms and eggs before treatment and do not prevent infertility.
