Sarah is a Postdoctoral Fellow in medical humanities. She received her B.A. in American Studies from the University of Iowa, her M.A. in the History of Science and Medicine from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and her Ph.D. in Medical Sciences, Preventive and Societal Medicine, from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Her dissertation explored the history of female circumcision and clitoridectomy as medical procedures practiced in the United States since the 1860s. She is beginning to work on contextualizing the history of Oncofertility by looking at it from both a medical and a cultural perspective.
"Dr. Erika," as her students call her, is the lead instructor for the Oncofertility Academy in San Diego and a full-time teacher.
Anaar is a graduate student from the MSTP program. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a BA in Molecular and Cell Biology in 2006. She will be investigating the dynamics of follicle growth as a function of the biochemical environment.
Robin is a graduate student in the MD/PhD program at Northwestern. She graduated from Boston College where she received a B.S. in Biochemistry. Before entering medical school, she worked with high risk breast and ovarian cancer patients at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and ultimately hopes to combine her clinical and research work to improve the lives of those facing and surviving cancer. She is currently interested in studying luteinization and improving in vitro ovarian follicle culture.
Cathryn Smeyers is the program manager for the Center for Reproductive Research. She manages the all the administrative components of the Center and works closely with the Director of Education Programs for the Institute for Women’s Health Research to support their educational initiatives. Cathryn graduated from the University of Michigan, with a concentration in English and a minor in French and Francophone Studies. She earned her Master of Arts in Teaching from National-Louis University.
Rachel Smith is a graduate student in the department of Chemical and
Biological Engineering at Northwestern University. She works for Dr.
Lonnie Shea as a member of the biomaterials core of the Oncofertility
Consortium. Rachel is interested in understanding how the mechanical
environment impacts follicle development in order to optimize current
in vitro follicle culture systems, as well as understand the role of
mechanics in folliculogenesis. Rachel received a B.S in biochemistry
with a minor in mathematics from Iowa State University in 2008.
David Tagler is a Ph.D. graduate student in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Northwestern University. He is a member of Dr. Lonnie D. Shea’s research laboratory, which collaborates with the Woodruff Laboratory. David received his B.S. in chemical and biomolecular engineering from the University of Notre Dame. His research interests include cell/tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, stem cells, and cancer. For more info please visit: http://www.davidtagler.com.
Cristina is a rising senior at Northwestern University, majoring in the biological sciences and minoring in gender studies. She has been working in the Woodruff lab since 2008 as an undergraduate research scholar and will attend the Feinberg School of Medicine in the fall of 2011.
